LiFE — Lifestyle For Environment (LiFE) Movement
About the LiFE Movement
Environmental degradation and climate change are global phenomena where actions in one part of the world impact ecosystems and populations across the globe. Estimates suggest that if requisite action is not taken, approximately 3 billion people could experience chronic water scarcity, and the global economy could lose up to 18% of GDP by 2050.
Over the last two decades, several macro measures have been implemented globally to address environmental degradation, including policy reforms and economic incentives. However, actions required at the level of individuals and communities have received limited attention.
Changing individual and community behaviour can significantly reduce environmental and climate risks. According to UNEP, if one billion people adopt environment-friendly behaviours, global carbon emissions could drop by approximately 20%.
The idea of LiFE was introduced by the Prime Minister during COP26 in Glasgow. The concept promotes mindful and deliberate utilisation instead of mindless consumption.
LiFE is a public movement (Jan Andolan) encouraging individuals to become pro-planet people. The movement leverages collective action and social networks to promote sustainable lifestyles.
The mission envisions replacing the use-and-dispose economy with a circular economy driven by mindful and responsible consumption.
